And even ditching Hollywood altogether.

Almost 20 years ago, Hartnett left L.A. for his home state of Minnesota.

First there were appearances in the sci-fi anthologyBlack Mirrorand Christopher Nolans Oscar-winning blockbusterOppenheimerlast year.

And now comes his first starring role in a long while, inM.

Night Shyamalans latest thriller,Trap(in theaters).

That wasnt who I ever was.

And I was never feeling that way.

In fact, he looks almost exactly the same as hes looked for nearly three decades.

This is a character that thinks of himself in a certain way and has been putting on this front.

Underneath it, hes been consistent in believing hes this abomination, this monster.

This is the day that he finds out that maybe theres a part of himself thats not.

As a longtime fan of Shyamalans work, Hartnett was invested inTrapfrom the moment he read the script.

It reminded him of self-contained, Nineties-era, filmmaker-driven thrillers.

That doesnt happen so much anymore.

To Hartnett, the case underscores one of the big ideas behindTrap: It could be anybody.

Thats the whole point.

It doesnt have to be a Ted Bundy or a John Wayne Gacy.

It could be your neighbor right now.

Despite the dark subject matter, there was plenty of levity on set.

Hartnett got to reunite briefly with an old friend,Kid Cudi.

The rapper and actor makes a cameo inTrapas another pop star called the Thinker.

In 2009, Hartnett and Cudi met at a Ratatat concert when Cudi was just starting to blow up.

But I just continued doing my own thing, and it was hard.

Martin Scorsese also comes to mind, though hes doubtful that moment will come.

He would also be open to returning toThe Bear.

Even actors that are not on for the day are there.
