Smiths sons announced her death Friday morning in a statement.
She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.
An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.

Her last big-screen appearance was a co-starring role in the 2023 British dramaThe Miracle Club.
In 2013, amidDownton Abbeys run, Smith wasasked by60 Minutesif she ever considered retiring from her craft.
I think that the date for that has gone by, Smith said.
I fear that I wont work in the theater again.
Im sad about that.
But I wont retire.
I think Ill keep going with Violet and whatever other old biddy comes along.
