The loss ofIrv Gotti, who died last week at the age of 54, is immense.

All in all, he was a genius.

But as were increasingly learning, genius often gets wielded as a weapon within the industry.

Its impossible to erase Gottis accomplishments.

Were all parsing the consequences of patriarchal power, one unsettling news story at a time these days.

For so many of our entertainment heroes, considering their legacy is more about contemplation than unabashed celebration.

Those with sound discernment are minding the complication in drawing sweeping conclusions about powerful men like Gotti.

Many things become true at once during a 54-year lifespan cut far too short.

Gotti grew up in Hollis, Queens, where hes said he had a rough upbringing.

He eventually learned how to DJ and make beats.

He soon signed on as an A&R at Def Jam.

Most importantly, he helped facilitate the joint venture between Jay-Zs Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam.

Irv Gottis vision helped save hip-hops foundational label, and Lyor Cohen admitted it while eulogizing Gotti.

From 1997 to 98, thelabels value rose to over 100 million dollars.

Gotti also helped develop singer Ashanti.

Songs like Always On Time, Down 4 U, and Mesmerize were melodic and accessible.

His disses and phenomenal momentum certainly helped, but several factors converged.

By 2003, hip-hops still-rugged core fanbase was growing weary of Ja Rules crooning.

And the federal raid of the Murder Inc. offices on money laundering charges in 2003 was a death knell.

The Murder Inc. officers were removed from the Universal building shortly after.

Gotti learned that everything is a commodity in the music industry, even genius.

Thats not fair to Gotti or Ja Rules legacy.

But despite that reality, he didnt get the second run he sought in music.

But itsThe Murder Inc. Storydocuseries that cemented his reputation with younger millennials and Gen Z fans.

And often, people around the genius look the other way at their flaws because of what they provide.

Murder Inc. was grossing over $100 million a year and he was feeling every ounce of that power.

He buried Jennifer Lopez inEllebecausehe was having a bad day.

He said he hoped his former signee Lloydgot hit by a truckfor doing a song with 50 Cent.

For her part, shes always been diplomatic when discussing him.
